Independence Through Design
When Jennifer, a wheelchair user, needed somewhere comfortable to sit while catching up with her family and friends, she reached out to The Posture Care Chair Company with help from her Occupational Therapist, and support through the NDIS.
Jennifer needed a recliner that would let her transfer independently from her wheelchair, something no standard chair could do. She called Posture Care and explained that she required a chair with hinges on the side, allowing her to open the arm and slide across by herself. She chose a Milan model chair tailored exactly to her needs.
The design process involved many trials and refinements, testing different mechanisms to make the arm movement as simple and reliable as possible. Every hinge, angle, and motor was tested and refined until it was absolutely perfect. The final design was a motorised lift-up arm, controlled by a remote, which tucks neatly behind the chair when raised. To ensure complete safety, the chair includes two backup batteries that activate automatically during a power outage.
Now, Jennifer transfers independently — raising her wheelchair slightly above the recliner, sliding in comfortably, and using Zero Gravity mode to lift her body and glide back to her wheelchair with ease.
Two years later, Jennifer is still loving her chair. When her wheelchair is being repaired, she finds her Posture Care Chair more comfortable and supportive than her bed, and she’s able to socialise with friends and family in complete ease and comfort.
